ART THERAPY
Creating art can be a healing process, especially within a therapeutic space. In art therapy you can engage with creative processes also beyond words, you can give form to things that you otherwise wouldn’t know how to express. Coming to the art therapy session, you will be able to step away from your everyday life and take the time to be in a space that is all for you. In this supportive and safe environment, you will be able to express and explore aspects of yourself and your life through engagement with various materials. At my studio in Berlin you will have many available materials and resources that you can use, from paints, pencils and pastels through collages and photographs (see Photo Therapy) to clay, stone and many more. You don’t need to have artistic skills or experience to do art therapy. It’s all about the process and personal expression. Everything you create is welcome and accepted. Contact me if you have any questions or would like to book a free introductory call and get to know each other. I am looking forward to hearing from you. Online art therapy is also possible. |
When can art therapy be helpful?
Sometimes we can use some support in finding our way in and through situations in life. We may be dealing with anxiety, depression, low self esteem, difficulties to regulate our emotions, social or relationship challenges, loneliness, lack of fulfillment, chronic illnesses, grief, or any other mental, emotional or physical challenge or illness. All of these belong to the human experience, but it can be difficult to deal with them on our own. Art therapy is a safe space for processing present and past experiences and for the expression of bottled up emotions. After treatment in a clinic it can also be helpful to continue having some support in daily life, especially if you’ve benefited from art therapy in the past. |
How can art therapy be helpful?
Art therapy can support our healing and growth on many levels. The artistic process in the therapy allows you to explore both directly and through symbolic means what is behind the challenges in your life. With the help of the therapist, you can find and develop your own individual resources for dealing with or resolving the things that burden you. The creative process can have a calming effect on its own. Along with the expression and deeper exploration of emotions, it can help you regulate the nervous system in the moment and in the long run. This is generally beneficial, and especially if you are dealing with chronic states. Through your artwork and the therapeutic process, you can discover new parts of yourself and gain new perspectives of yourself and the world around you. This can be transformative. |
In a session
We will form our individual sessions in a way that suits you best. In general, you will be able to choose freely which materials you want to use and what you want to do, and I will be there to gently guide and support you when needed. We will talk about the process and your created works when this can be helpful. And remember – everything you create is welcome and accepted. In a couples session and in a group session we will open the sessions with a short talk, followed by your individual creative time, which constitutes the better part of the session. At the end we will take some time to look at and talk about the artworks and the processes. This is always done with respect and support toward one another. The perspectives of others and being able to contribute our own can be a very beneficial part of the therapy. |

Although art therapy is not usually automatically covered by health insurance in Germany, you may be able to be partially refunded. If you have private health insurance or an additional insurance for non-medical practitioners (Heilpraktiker), check with the insurance company whether and to what extent they may cover the therapy. If you have public health insurance, a partial refund may sometimes be possible with a letter from your physician or psychiatrist stating a diagnosis and a recommendation for art therapy. |
There are additional options to apply for funding:
Persons with disabilities can apply for the ‘Persönliches Budget’ (Personal Budget) financial support. There is unfortunately no version in English, but here you can find a flyer in ‘simple German’. Adolescents and children with disabilities can apply for financial support at the ‘Jugendamt’ (Youth Welfare Office) according to § 35a Abs. 1a SGB VIII. Each Berlin district has a Jugendamt, here you can find information about this topic at Jugendamt Mitte. |
